Coach Maria (aka Motor)
About Maria
Maria’s CrossFit journey started way back in October 2015 on a soccer pitch when she asked Fay, a.k.a. Bruiser, what CrossFit was. Before CrossFit, Maria competed as a black belt in Shotokan karate with over 10 years experience.
Though Maria loved competing, injuries forced her to give up karate. CrossFit has given her a second life as a competitive athlete. Maria got her CrossFit Level 1 certification in 2021 as a way to better understand the sport she loved with no plan of coaching CrossFit.
What changed her mind?
After knee surgery, Maria’s road to recovery has been chiefly around mobility work and
rebuilding strength. She found she was back to basics and enjoying it. This newfound joy gave her the confidence to try coaching.
What is my proudest accomplishment in CrossFit?
Doing my first CrossFit competition at the CanWest Games in 2019 and finishing 3rd. And
placing 4th in the CanWest Games 2022. Competing has changed the way I train. I used to look forward to doing workouts and movements I was good at, and now I look forward to doing the ones I need to work on.
What advice would you give someone to start their fitness journey and/or CrossFit?
I understand that life can be hectic, and finding time to work out is often challenging. We can find many excuses: injury, work, family life. I’ve been there too. CrossFit is something anyone can do. You don’t have to be fit to start. That will come with time, effort and consistency. Let me help you discover the benefits of training that have helped me overcome some obstacles. There’s nothing more important to me than getting my clients to start their fitness journey and help them be happy, strong, and confident. I am here to guide you in your journey every step of the way.
