Breath is life. But do you know how to breathe effectively? Disciplines like weightlifting, yoga and martial arts teach practitioners breathing skills for health and for optimizing performance but do you know how to breathe for CrossFit?
XPT (Extreme Performance Training) is the brain child of surfing legend Laird Hamilton and Olympian Gabby Reese. If you know surfing, you know who Laird is. Not only is he a legend of surfing who pioneered big wave surfing in his youth, he continues to surf waves today in his 50’s that could kill most surfers. Besides his surfing exploits, Laird has become famous throughout the athletic world for pioneering off-season conditioning training in order to stay in shape for surfing. His program is so effective it has attracted elite athletes from across the world of sports including CrossFit luminaries Brian Mackenzie (CrossFit Endurance founder), Kelly Starrett (Mobility WOD) and breathing guru Wim “The Iceman” Hoff.
On Saturday March 14th chef, author, XPT certified breathwork coach and 2015 CrossFit Regionals competitor Brooke Siem will visit CrossFit Empower to host a clinic on effective breathing.
You (hopefully) pay attention to your technique, reps, and mindset when you work out, but when is the last time you paid attention to your breath? Breath is the foundation of life itself, and yet it is one of the most neglected components of health and performance. Your ability to manage your breath directly affects your ability to manage stress and work capacity, both in and out of the gym.
In this workshop, we’ll explore simple yet effective tools that will teach you to harness your breath in order to lower stress, improve athletic performance, recover efficiently. You’ll learn:
- How to recover your resting heart rate as fast as possible
- To focus the mind on something other than intra-workout fatigue
- The “why” behind proper breathing mechanics and physiology
- How a change in breathing patterns can improve your sleep
BREATH IS POWER
Our breath is the remote control to our mind. With each breath, we send our brain crucial bits of information: Are we stressed or are we calm? Distracted or focused? Anxious or in the flow?
Conscious breathwork teaches us to manage our stress, control our energy output, and strengthen our mental game. By harnessing the power of our breath, we gain control over our entire lives.
Because this clinic is of special interest to our competitors, we are hosting it at 11am in place of our usual team training but it is open to all Empower members. Only 10 spots remain. To reserve a spot you must pay in advance, cash only, $40 per person.
The clinic will include a workout that allows you to practice performance breathing in action. Dress in workout gear and bring a yoga mat if you have one. Please arrive 10 minutes before class begins.
