This is it! This week we see the start of the 2021 CrossFit Open and the beginning of a new era in CrossFit Games competition under new management and new sponsorship. CrossFit founder Glassman always considered the CrossFit Games a sideshow and preferred to focus HQ energies elsewhere. New owner Eric Roza and Games Director Dave Casttro have a much bigger vision for the sport of CrossFit and a much more inclusive one.
This includes a bigger stage for masters/age group athletes, for adaptive athletes, and for team competition. It includes a new, foundations division for the Open which means everyone at every level can participate. There is even an equipment-free division for those still in lock down who wish to join in but have no equipment.
And this year they are introducing special divisions for military, law enforcement, firefighters, health care professionals, college students and teachers with the vision of one day having these divisions represented at the Games.
Make no mistake, the sport of CrossFit is about to grow. At its peak, the Open attracted over 400,000 participants worldwide. Castro and Roza have a goal of growing it to +4 million! This is the first year in a new era for our sport and you can be part of it.
It all starts this Thursday March 11th with the announcement of the first event at 5pm. Participants will have until 5pm Monday March 15th to complete the workout and submit their scores. This year will see 3 weeks of competition with events announced on March 11th, 18th, and 25th.
Empower competitors can complete the workouts during any Open Gym time. Register to book your spot in class and bring your own judge.
So far here are the athletes representing Team Empower:
Motor, Shorty, Pepper, Shine, Multi Sport, Shades, Fierce, Hawkeye, Jedi, HeeHee, WOD Father, DT, Lightning, Dr. T & Silk
If you are registered but don’t see your name on this list please go into your profile and select Empower as your affiliate. It is not too late to register if you want to help represent Empower in this year’s Open.
We will need all the judging help we can get and this year’s judging course is a smoother, more straight forward experience than any previous year. I recommend all registered athletes complete the judging course so you are fully aware of the competitions standards and we can help judge each other .
After the year we’ve just been through, it’s about time we had some fun! DT wants to know if you’ve picked your costume yet.
