Coach Sprite was inspired to create a new summer class for all the Empower families, a game day in the park.  Whenever you go out on a limb to try something new, you never know how it will turn out.  Does anyone even want this?  Will anyone turn up?  At 10 to 2 Saturday afternoon, sitting alone in Almond Park I’m sure Sprite was wondering if it was all a mistake.  But then they started to arrive.

HeeHee & I were first as we live nearby.  Sandman & Silk arrived next with their 4 kids.   Then Shine with one of her 3 boys plus his friend.  Fierce & Menace rode up with their troop of 4.  And finally Pepper & Iron Man with Fury.  So 16 total.  Not bad for our first Game Day!

First we did a warm up and a couple Tabatas to prep us for the main event: Capture the Flag! Dads & Seb vs everyone else.  We won the first and third game but even Sandman’s appeals to the ref could not save us in the other 3 games.  But defeat just fuels our fire and we’re looking forward to avenging our loss next Saturday whatever next week’s game may be.

And if you’re wondering why I was there even though I have no small children to play along, I must admit to an ulterior motive.  You see, Game Day is part of my training strategy.  Running is one of my CrossFit weaknesses.  To be a better competitor I need to be practicing my running and that would be fine if I actually enjoyed running, but I don’t.  I do however enjoy games.  And I’ve found whether it’s a simple game of tag or teams of capture the flag, the kids really work me hard.  I’m running hard and I don’t even notice it.  And isn’t that what this is all about anyhow?  An active lifestyle filled with community, fresh air and play.  Who says training has to be a grind?
