WOD are you doing for Women’s Day 2020?

Should your calendar allow, come to CrossFit Empower Saturday March 7, 2020 at 5pm for a by donation Athletics class in support of Stronger Together Vancouver’s Annual Workout for Women’s Day, a fundraising event to benefit the following three extremely important charities in our City:

Established in 1979 BWSS is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support services and advocacy for women who have suffered physical and emotional abuse. Community education and training programs aimed at preventing violence against women are also hallmark services. Part of a global anti-violence movement, the BWSS long-term goal is the elimination of all violence against women and girls.

BWSS also operates My Sisters Closet, a nicely appointed thrift store staffed by volunteers, the proceeds fund their efforts. A great looking shop. Donations of clothing accepted during store hours. All you need to do is stop in and drop it off. Spring cleaning? Here is a worthy place to take your purge.

Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre’s mandate is to support and empower women and children living in extreme poverty, on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, an area characterized by high levels of violence, homelessness, and addictions where women and children are particularly vulnerable. The centre provides practical support to over 500 women and children daily.  They operate a low-barrier drop-in centre and emergency night shelter which includes a safe, women-only space (inclusive of transgender women), hot nutritious meals, clothing, toiletries, computer and phone access, and counselling services.

Girls Rock Camp Vancouver

Girls Rock Camp Vancouver is a non-profit society that builds self esteem in girls through music creation and performance. By providing workshops and technical training, Girls Rock Vancouver creates leadership opportunities for at risk youth, cultivates a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourages social change and the development of life skills.

Your donations towards these three charities help create positive change in our community each day!

Workout for Women’s Day and Stronger Together Vancouver: The Why

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. It is a chance to reflect on how far we have come, identify gaps and strive for betterment.

Stronger Together Vancouver is a project co-founded by local trainers Shana Alexander and Andi Davis in the belief of the power of fitness to create community connections and support meaningful causes. Stronger Together Vancouver seeks to unite the fitness community in Vancouver on International Women’s Day by supporting girls and women locally through their signature fundraising campaign: Workout for Women’s Day. Last year, on their first go, they raised almost 7000.00 for Big Sisters of the Lower Mainland, Dress for Success Vancouver and Cause We Care.

This year’s Workout for Women’s Day is a week long event with classes being offered by donation throughout the city March 1-8
