On Friday, May 15 from 5:00–6:00 PM, we’re hosting a women-only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clinic at Empower, led by Coach Leona.
If you’ve ever been curious about jiu-jitsu—or just want to try something completely different—this is your chance.
No experience needed. No pressure. Just a fun, beginner-friendly hour to learn something new.

What Makes Jiu Jitsu So Powerful?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective grappling sports in the world—but it’s not about brute strength.
It’s about leverage, positioning, and technique.
That means you don’t need to be big, strong, or experienced to get started. You just need to show up.
And once you do… it’s pretty addictive.
Meet Your Coach: Leona
Coach Leona has been training in jiu-jitsu for over five years and has coached both kids and adults—but her passion is working with women.
She knows exactly what it feels like to be new:
“When I started BJJ, I was a young teenage girl, pretty small, and I was getting beat up by everybody,” says Leona.
But that situation eventually changed.
“It took a lot of resilience, commitment, and consistency… focusing on technique and different ways I can leverage my body. Now I can roll against people who are 200 pounds. It’s made me so much more confident.”
That experience shapes how she coaches today.
“I’m so devoted to building a safe space for girls to feel empowered… to feel like they have ownership of their own body—and to feel confident out in the world.”

What You’ll Learn (And Yes, It’s Fun)
This isn’t a lecture. You’ll be moving, learning, and laughing the whole time.
Here’s what the session will include:
A basic takedown (how to safely bring someone from standing to the ground)
An attack position
Self-defence techniques to help you protect yourself
How to use angles and leverage against someone bigger and stronger
As Leona puts it:
“It’s really fun to learn how to choke someone. Seriously.”
