A Call to Arms: Fight for Your Life!
Just because Halloween is over does not mean the scariness is over. Because whether you are aware of it or not, you are in a fight for your life. Nature is trying to kill you!
Have you ever wondered about the remarkable recovery powers of youth? Kids can play hard, eat poorly, skip sleep and bounce back like a rubber ball. That’s because nature designed them for durability and resilience.
Evolution has done its darndest to ensure that whatever hardship you throw at them, the young survive to perpetuate the species. This means that they can get away with a host of reckless behaviours without suffering adverse consequences. At least until they have reached an age when they have successfully raised their own children.
But somewhere around age forty, when evolution decides your reproductive contribution is no longer critical to the continuance of the species, cellular senescence rears its head ugly and nature, seeing no great evolutionary advantage to keeping you around, begins seeking ways to shuffle you prematurely off the mortal coil.
This linked T-Nation article lists the most likely means of disposal:
Heart Disease (20.6%)
Cancer (17%)
Accidents (6%)
Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases (5.8%)
Stroke (5%)
Alzheimer's Disease (4.3%)
Diabetes (3%)
Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis (2.5%)
Kidney Disease (1.8%)
Suicide (1.7%)
Don’t Panic! Though you may be alarmed at first to discover there are ten daggers out there in the dark intent upon your demise, it will help to realize that most of them operate through the same mechanism: inflammation!
That’s right, managing your chronic inflammation serves as a shield against all your predatory adversaries. How do you manage chronic inflammation, you ask? How do you forestall these dread assassins and keep death’s messengers from your doorstep?
It mostly comes down to lifestyle factors that you had little need to worry about in your youth: sleep, exercise, good nutrition, managing your chronic stress. You might have made it through the first forty years with hangovers, sleepless nights, sedentary behaviour and a fast food diet but once cellular senescence strips you of your powers of youthful rejuvenation, those bad habits start stripping years off your life.
Make no mistake, you are in a battle for survival with an evolutionary mechanism that has no incentive structure for keeping you around. The tide has shifted. The genetic factors you used to take for granted that helped you thrive thus far, are now working against you.
There are many good decades available for you yet but if you want to be healthy enough to enjoy them, you need to get serious about the odds stacked against you! You need to arm yourself with knowledge and discipline yourself to take preemptive action in your own defense!
