The food is fuel fallacy has led many astray.  Not that we don’t use food for fuel, of course we do.  It’s just that the analogy is not accurate.  Fuel gets used up and replaced.  You can burn wood in your stove or coal, it doesn’t matter because once it's burned up, you start over fresh.  But the food you eat isn’t only used for fuel, it is used as the building materials for every single cell in your body.  A much more accurate saying is: you are what you eat.

Imagine the story of the three little pigs and the three big bad wolves.  Ever hungry, the wolves are always on the prowl eating every little pig they can catch.  The wolves' names are Charlie V. Daniels (CV for short), Diane (Di) Beatty, and Carson Noma and between them they are responsible for devouring fully 70% of the little piggy population.

Piggy number one, Sweetums, loved her sugar-glazed house of confectionary treats.  Piggy number two, Fast Eddy, built his domicile out of greasy fast food wrappers and take out trays.  But piggy number three put some real muscle into the building of her fortress.  Buttressed with amino acids and Omega 3 fatty acids, she built a mote of minerals and micronutrients making her home impregnable.

Well, what do you think became of piggies one and two when the three big bad wolves came passing through?  As for piggy number three, the wolves took one look at her imposing castle and moved on in search of easier pickings.

Stop.  Take a look at what you are about to put into your mouth.  Are you building a fortress or a feeding ground for disease?  I am continuously shocked and alarmed to hear what people think is healthy.  If you’re not sure what building blocks you should be using to fortify your castle, maybe book a nutrition consult with Shades
