Leading from the front
“A good leader leads from the front. Don’t get stuck in the office. Get out, meet people and listen to their stories.” –Richard Branson
Thought of the day
Have you heard the phrase: “Do as I say not how I do”? Many people lead and parent this way. Having higher standard for those they lead then they have for themselves. We don’t like this style of, do as I say not as I do, leadership at Empower. Because of this Corey and I will not ever ask anything from you or any of our coaches that we are not willing to do ourselves. If we are late to a class burpees are done, if we miss a reservation we will pay the miss class fee, Have a setback we will be in training around it, and we will be consistent in our training regardless of all our own life stresses and busyness.
Leadership is not about getting privileges that others do not. It is about standing for what you believe in and leading other that want to go in the same direction. Do you want to get fit and add physical freedom to your life? If so follow our lead. Both of us where injured grapplers and off the mats. But now we are back on the mats and have the thing that gets our bodies able to compete. It is simple but not easy to get there. Show up to the gym at least three times a week, Scale and modify appropriately for the day, and consistently do that. If we had any time off we will ramp ourselves back up gradually and not reach for the sun or RX like we have been training nonstop. You are training for life so let’s make sure to challenge you in appropriate ways.
If you need help with the last part Empower coaches always do the workouts before they coach you through them. We will have good options to get you moving regardless of what you are dealing with. As leaders, who believe in fitness, we have also needed to be coachable along the journey through setbacks. When my hamstring was torn from my first Jiu jitsu match I was not back squatting heavy the next day. I was working with in pain free ranges of motion, working with my physio, and doing right by my body. This allowed me to rehab and get back to back squatting heavy, and competing in Jiu Jitsu in time.
Your path to physical freedom is simple but not always easy. All you need to do is be coachable, consistent, and play appropriately. We are here to guide you as people who are walking the walk along side you. If you are doing a workout it is one we have done too. We will never ask of you to do anything that we would not do ourselves. Leading from the front is important. In what areas of life are you applying leading from the front to better support those around you?
