Never ending improvement
“Commit to “Can I!” constant and never ending improvement.” –Tony Robbins
Thought of the day
Life is about continues improvement. We don’t have to be amazing to start. But sometimes the fact that we are not a natural or not getting it right away can dissuade us from the journey of improving. What will they say if they see how bad our squat is or that we cannot yet do a pull up? These questions might become a reason to keep someone out of the gym and from making progress towards who they want to be. Let me let you in on a little secret, most people are so self absorbed that you don’t pop up on their radar. So why would you let what they might think stop you from your improvement Journey?
In the gym and in life it is easy to keep focusing on the things you are already great at. You can hide from those weaknesses by cherry picking your workouts or the things you take on daily. But in those weak areas there are many opportunities for you to improve and push through things you did not think possible. On the mats I am not perfect at every throw or in every position. But by working on the principles of those throws and positions I get the opportunity to get better both offensively and defensively. The classic story of tackling weaknesses comes from Coach Glassman. He was working with the US downhill ski team. Looking at these Olympians they had many strengths but also one glaring weakness in their gymnastics: pull ups. He work to get them pull ups and some of them even got muscle ups. The cool thing is their times got better with the development of their gymnastics skill. We can take a big lesson from the humbleness it takes to be the best in the world and work on something you suck at. Each day in the gym we have an opportunity for tackle a weakness and develop your mindset. This week look for little challenges you may be hiding from. We may look silly but you could unlock something new with these little opportunities.
You may be an Olympian at what you do but don’t forget to take those little opportunities for continues improvement. You don’t know how fast those small seemingly insignificant victories add up to big wins. If the opinions of others are stopping you; just remember you are on your own journey and in the grand scheme of things they probably care very little about what you are doing. Don’t be afraid to look a little silly and challenge yourself in these little ways. It is all a part of the journey to continue improvement.
