Overcoming Fear: From Intimidation to Triumph, One Step at a Time
Overcoming Fear: From Intimidation to Triumph, One Step at a Time
“It may seem difficult at first, but everything is difficult at first.” – Miyamoto Musashi
Thought of the Day
Today’s workout reminded me of the truth behind this quote. Looking at the couplet, I wasn’t excited—wall walks are one of my weakest movements, and it’s been a long time since I’ve done pistol squats. To say there was an element of fear going in would be an understatement. But as round one began, it seemed tough, and yet, with each subsequent round, the fear diminished.
The gym is your lab, a place to face obstacles and fears, emerging stronger and ready to apply these lessons to life.
Take a moment to reflect on something you’ve done or currently do that once intimidated you. What challenges have you overcome to lower the difficulty? Success breeds success—it’s not just about confidence but taking action.
In 2025, I’ve signed up for an event that scares me. It’s not new, but it’s been 15 years since I last competed. On the plus side, I’m fitter, still grappling, and eager for the challenge. On the flip side, I’m older (likely the oldest in my division), haven’t competed in Judo for years, and will face brown and black belts that have been active. Regardless of the outcome, preparing for this event will be a growth opportunity. Like today’s workout, the journey begins with one step at a time.
Everything seems hard at first. The gym gives you small victories that help you show up as your best self when life throws challenges your way. At Empower, the workouts will test you and bring out your strength. Some days, you’ll fear the workout, but your coaches will guide you to success.
Over the next week, think of the tasks that once seemed difficult but are now part of your routine. Together, we’ll face new challenges and make them manageable, one step at a time.
