Small Steps, Big Dreams: Pushing Through the Plateaus
"Big visions are realized through small steps." – Mike Glenn
Thought of the Day
Training and martial arts have a habit of coming full circle. You start as a beginner, and often, as you train and grow, you return to the beginner phase. Now, however, you have more knowledge and can push yourself to another level. In Judo, it is often stated that as a black belt, you are now ready to start learning. You know all the basics, but now it is time to refine your personal game. As a brown belt, I have already gone through this circle many times and have started to see things I was previously unaware of.
One of the biggest difference-makers is recognizing that when we hit that beginner plateau, we have enough knowledge to know it won't last forever. Rather than stopping and quitting during the lows, focus on what you can control. Keep showing up and try to do the little things a bit better than you did yesterday. This action will keep you moving forward on your journey.
In Jiu-Jitsu, there is a phenomenon called the "blue belt blues." At blue belt, people often start to realize their weaknesses. Because you stay at blue belt for so long, many people quit—whether due to life circumstances or mentality. When you feel your training is in a lull, are you the type of person who gets down on yourself, or do you continue to work through it?
Next time you feel like your training is at a standstill, remember that this is an important part of your journey. If you need support or guidance, reach out to your coach—we can help because we have all been through it. You are not alone. Everyone experiences this, whether in the training room, at work, or just in life in general. Keep showing up and making the small, meaningful steps happen, even when you find yourself back at the beginner part of your journey.
