Are you in? If so, one of the most effective things you can do right now to get ready is to take an honest look at your nutrition, especially if you feel like you still need to dial it in after the holidays. What does the act of “dialling it in” actually mean? It will vary from person to person, but here are some common places where small adjustments can make a big difference!
Sleep comes first
If you’re not well rested, you’ll be hungrier, crave more carbs and quick energy, and find it much harder to eat proper meals. Trying to “eat well” while sleep-deprived is an uphill battle. Slowing life down enough to get proper rest is one of the single biggest nutrition upgrades you can make.
Hydration matters
Are you drinking enough water, or mostly running on coffee? I can easily live on coffee. Cold weather makes hydration harder. Adapt. Hot water and herbal tea count. Every sip counts in fact! Do your best.
Watch random intake
Bites here and there of cookies, muffins, handfuls of nuts and other random snacks add up quickly. They taste great, but don’t fill you up. Meals first; snacks as a last resort.
Set your environment up to help
Put fruit and vegetables front and centre in the fridge and put beer in the crisper. Batch-cook when you can and keep containers of quick leftovers at hand. Don’t be afraid to eat dinner leftovers for breakfast; it will keep you full and away from mid-morning muffins.
