Teams and the Long Game

January 28, 20252 min read

We are very excited to share a project with you from one Empower's personal training clients. The one the only Timothy Taylor! It has been amazing to see his hard work and dedication pay off in the gym over this past year. It is always a special treat when we get to share the hard work and important projects from members outside of the gym too. Enjoy today's blog brought to you by Timothy.

On Teams and the Long Game

It’s hard to overestimate what’s possible in a gym over one year. I came to Empower at the end of 2023 and had a fitness mountain to climb. Three times weekly since then (less holidays) and … well let’s just say I’m some distance up the mountain. The air breaths better. And I prefer this view.

I credit Empower with so much of this: Maria, Leon, Amy, Corey. Thank you. You folks lead from the front. Also: doing my PT with Maria, I got to watch the weekday 6AMers. Fist bump. I picked up big energy off you guys too.

About a year ago I started another project. And that was a whole other mountain. I’m a writer by trade. But a few years back, I inherited 10,000 pages of an archive of letters and diaries exchanged between my grandfather and his brother. (Yup, 10K. You read that correctly.) My Opa was a holocaust survivor. So was his brother. They fled Germany to Ecuador and NYC respectively around 1940, leaving their families behind, including my mother. Then the two men wrote each other letters over the next decade or so until the families were reunited. A LOT of letters. Fascinating stuff with real historical interest.

When my mom passed away she told my sister I’d know what to do with all that material. At first, I really didn’t. But eventually, I had the idea for a podcast exploring what I was discovering as I read. Other people got involved. The Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre sponsored. The Walrus Magazine came aboard. We had editors and sound designers and executive producers attach.

I’m a novelist. I always thought I worked best alone (less Avenger, more Wolverine). Turns out I was wrong. Getting up that mountain took everyone.

Monday January 27 we launch in all the places where podcasts are found. The project is called The Hidden Holocaust Papers: Survival. Exile. Return.

It took about a year and a whole team of people to get the project up the slope into clear air. To get it high enough to see the view.

I’d be honored if you checked it out. Follow the link above. And: fist bump. Thank you.
