Why Empower? A Different Approach to Functional Fitness in Vancouver

September 01, 20266 min read

“You Lack Ambition”

“You lack ambition,” is what my father told me before he passed.

“When are you going to do more with your talents than run a gym?” my mother asked.

They don't get it. But can you blame them? Most people won't.

After all, it's not like I didn't have other options. I graduated from UBC with degrees in anthropology and education. I began my career as an elementary school teacher in the Richmond School District before moving to the Fraser Valley to help my father with his staffing business. Within six years, I had leveraged that experience into a six-figure income as an independent staffing consultant.

And then I walked away from all of it.

I left a successful career to become a CrossFit coach, earning a fraction of what I had before. Worse still, over the next twenty years I invested more than a quarter of a million dollars of inheritance money into becoming a better coach and building Empower in Vancouver. To borrow a line from Jurassic Park, "I spared no expense."

You can understand why my parents worried.

From the outside, it probably looked like I had thrown away a promising career to run a gym.

People Think We Sell Fitness

Here's what they missed.

Most people think the fitness industry exists to help people lose weight, build bigger biceps, or look better in a bathing suit.

That's never been what interested me.

I'm interested in helping people reclaim their lives.

Over the years, I've come to believe that well-coached functional fitness—what we practice through CrossFit—is one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation that exists.

Not because it gives you abs. Because it gives you capability.

Most of the people we coach at Empower aren't elite athletes. They're busy professionals, parents, grandparents, retirees, and people who simply want to stay strong enough to enjoy the lives they've built. They want to travel without worrying about keeping up. They want to hike, ski, play with their grandchildren, carry their groceries, and continue saying "yes" to life's adventures long after many people have accepted that getting older means slowing down.

To me, that's what functional fitness is all about.

Every day in our Vancouver gym, I watch ordinary people become stronger than they ever imagined possible. I watch people in their forties, fifties, sixties, and seventies discover that they are far more resilient than they believed. I watch people stop defining themselves by old injuries, bad habits, or the limitations they've accepted for years.

My own life was transformed first. My wife's was second.

Then came our friends, our family, and eventually thousands of athletes who have walked through the doors of Empower.

That feeling never gets old.

The fulfillment that comes from helping another human being become stronger, healthier, and more confident overrides any desire I ever had for wealth, status, or recognition.

It makes every day meaningful.

We Don't Chase Fitness. We Chase Health Span.

One of the ideas that has shaped my coaching over the years is the difference between lifespan and health span.

Living longer isn't much of a gift if those extra years are spent in pain, dependent on others, or unable to do the things that make life worth living.

I'd much rather help someone remain capable.

Strong enough to lift their suitcase into the overhead bin.

Mobile enough to get down on the floor with their grandchildren—and back up again.

Fit enough to join friends on a hike without wondering if they'll be the one holding everyone back.

Confident enough to say yes when life offers an adventure.

Fitness isn't the destination. It's the vehicle that allows people to keep living fully.

It's Never Really About the Pull-Up

People often assume CrossFit is about workouts.

It isn't.

The workouts are simply the vehicle.

It's never really about your first pull-up, your first deadlift, the weight you lose, or the race you finish.

Those are milestones.

The real victory is becoming the kind of person who believes they can do difficult things.

When we coach someone to accomplish something they once thought impossible, they begin to question the limits they've accepted everywhere else in their lives.

That confidence doesn't stay in the gym.

It follows them home—into their careers, into difficult conversations, into parenting, and into aging.

Into every challenge life places in front of them.

That's what transformation looks like.

The Video That Says It Better Than I Can

Reading these words won't fully explain why I do what I do, so I've linked a video that captures it better than I ever could.

PRISONER NO MORE: The True Story of Tae Jin Park

Now, I am no Jerzy Gregorek, nor would I compare myself to him.

But within the gifts I've been given, I strive to do for every athlete I coach what he has done for so many others: help them discover a strength they didn't know they possessed.

The Meaning Behind the Name Empower

When my wife and I started this journey, she asked me a simple question.

"If you could deliver just one thing to the people you coach, what would it be?"

I didn't hesitate.

Empowerment.

That's why we chose the name Empower.

Not because we wanted to build another CrossFit gym in Vancouver.

Because we wanted to build a place where people leave more capable than when they arrived.

A place where:

  • A forty-five-year-old can discover they're stronger than they were at thirty-five.

  • A sixty-year-old can learn they don't have to accept weakness as an inevitable part of aging.

  • Someone who has spent years doubting themselves begins to trust their own strength again.

At Empower, we measure success differently.

Success isn't six-pack abs. It's lifting your own luggage into the overhead compartment, carrying every grocery bag in one trip because you can, getting up off the floor without needing help, and keeping up with your kids today and your grandkids tomorrow.

It's having the confidence to say yes to the hike, the ski trip, the charity race, or the vacation you've always wanted to take.

It's staying capable enough to live life on your own terms.

Our mission has never been to create better exercisers.

It's to help people become stronger, healthier, and more capable human beings.

The pull-ups, deadlifts, rowing, burpees, and barbells are simply the tools we use to get there.

This Is Why I Chose Coaching

So, Mom and Dad, this is why I dedicate my life, my career, my education, and my passion to coaching.

Not because I lack ambition.

Because I have a bigger ambition than wealth or fame.

I want to help people build a longer health span, not simply a longer lifespan. I want people to remain adventurous into their sixties, seventies, and beyond—and discover that getting older doesn't have to mean becoming smaller, weaker, or more afraid.

I want Empower to be the place where people in Vancouver realize they are capable of far more than they ever imagined.

I don't need the credit. I don't need the acknowledgement.

The reward comes from quietly knowing that someone's life is better because our paths crossed.

That's why Empower exists.

And that's why, after all these years, I still wouldn't choose any other path.
