Mistakes

Failure: what an opportunity

Thought of the day

2

The goal in life should not be to make no mistakes, but should actually be always making new mistakes. Sometimes we think one mistake will completely sink us but most mistakes give you an opportunity to be better next time and have more information of what does not work as you move toward your goal. Failure is a huge thing in martial arts and in CrossFit. You can fail to get the submission, dominate the position, or be effective with your movements. Rather than this spelling doom, it leads to an opportunity to pivot, grow, and comeback stronger.  In life taking ownership of the mistakes will help you make changes too. If this is the case, why is it so hard to do the same off the mats and out of the gym when mistakes happen?

Over the next week take note of all the mistakes you make (for some of you it will be more than others) and write down what you will do different next time.  This challenge can be hard, especially when this means taking ownership of things going wrong.  If you want to be able to take things to the next level mistakes will happen. Others may be able to take many things from you but your experience and knowledge is not one of them. Commit to owning things so you are in the driver seat and able to continue to grow and move forward. The most successful people have just made more mistakes and learned more lessons along the way.

The training room is a great environment for you to practice Failing safely. Every time you miss a rep, loss count of your reps, or do some really questionable movement you have an opportunity to learn.  Next time this happens to you say “good”, listen to your coach and make the appropriate adjustment. This skill is not only important for the gym but also for life and even a great gift to pass on to your children. Next time things are not going your way what will you learn from it?
