Give your child, middle-schooler, or teenager the confidence to tackle whatever the world throws at them through fitness and development.

Our Empower Youth Fitness Programs in Vancouver are designed to develop strong, adaptable, resilient athletes with superior physical literacy. These programs are designed to meet the neurological and physiological needs of the each respective age group. Because these functional fitness movements are scalable, the athletes can safely train at their level.

Whether your child is just starting their fitness journey, is playing sports at a recreational level or is an experienced elite athlete, our programs will help them excel.

In the gym your young athlete will develop self-awareness, discipline, focus and perseverance that will help them overcome obstacles outside the gym. We want to help create a passion for fitness that your child will carry with them throughout their lives.

Group Classes, Small Group Training, and 1:1 Coaching for Youth

Choose from any of the following programs or call for a custom option

Youth fitness programs: junior varsity

For athletes aged 8-12

Junior Varsity

Ages: 8-12

Prerequisites: None

Start date: September 2

The Junior Varsity group learns all the foundational movements of CrossFit. This includes weight lifting, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning. The PVC pipe is an excellent tool for teaching complex movements like clean and jerks without load until the athlete is ready to handle a barbell. If you stop by during class time you might see us playing games like shoulder tap cone grab or tabata hot potato hollow holds. These games help develop the smaller stabilizing muscles as well as make it fun so the kids work hard without realizing it!

Prerequisites: none at this time. All youth athletes welcome. Athletes who have participated in Junior Varsity can graduate to Varsity level when they age up.

Youth fitness programs: varsity

For athletes aged 13-17

Varsity

Ages: 13-17

Prerequisites: Prior assessment

Start date: September 2025

Our Varsity program includes all weight lifting movements, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning. All weights are scaled appropriately to the correct stimulus and intensity for the athlete. We work on injury prevention and strong core conditioning in addition to providing a positive, confidence-building environment.

Prerequisites: Coach assessment and approval to ensure you can transition to Varsity classes safely and easily. One-to-one coaching sessions are available if needed to set you up for success in this program.

Register now, and we'll arrange for an assessment at a time convenient for you prior to joining class.

Youth fitness programs: homeschool PE

For young athletes on an alternative education path

Homeschool PE

Ages: 9-17

Prerequisites: None

Start date: September 10

Homeschool PE is a CrossFit-based program that incorporates cardio, strength training, and gymnastics movements for complete body conditioning. All weights are scaled appropriately to the correct stimulus and intensity for the athlete.

We work on injury prevention and strong core conditioning in addition to providing a positive confidence-building environment. Best of all, we have fun doing it, by incorporating partner workouts and games.

For teams between seasons

Team Training

Ages: 9-18

Prerequisites: None

Empower offers dryland training for teams that are coming off the ice, out of the pool or are in between seasons. Bring your team in for strength and conditioning sessions and set them up for success when they return to sport.

Youth Personal Training

Our Youth Personal Training program is custom built to support the needs of your athlete. These custom programmed sessions can be built to support youth athletes in specific sports with a focus on strengthening, injury prevention, and injury recovery.

Personal training can be done 1:1 or in small groups (1:2, 1:3, 1:4, etc.) so kids can train with their friends.

Whether the group class time doesn’t fit your schedule, your athlete works better one-on-one, or your elite athlete is looking for more specific training, we are here to help meet those needs.

Reflections on New Age Horse Manure

Still listening to Super Agers. Currently on the chapter about the current state of immunotherapies in treating cancers and autoimmune disorders. Turns out our gut is the largest immune organ in our body and the health of your intestinal microbiome plays a significant role in your ability to combat disease. From lupus to cancer to type one diabetes, the microbiome of affected people differs significantly from that of healthy people. This is hard science. Peer reviewed. Controlled studies. Presented by an M.D. exploring the cutting edge of today’s medical research.

The microbiome is no longer a fringe theory

It's funny to me because less than fifteen years ago when, as a CrossFit coach, I spoke to my clients who were medical doctors about the emerging importance of the gut microbiome, they politely informed me that I was being misled by a bunch of new age horse manure promoted by quacks. No, I argued, I think the emerging evidence is fairly convincing. But it is hard to change minds that are already made up. Well, now the microbiome is no longer a fringe theory but the very cutting edge of medical science. And while, yes, I do feel vindicated, that is not what came up for me while listening to Super Agers.

What occurred to me as I reflected on our developing understanding of the complexities of human health, is how often what we think we know is wrong or, how sometimes it is right but for the wrong reasons. Take for example, organic food. I’ve listened for decades to the arguments back and forth about whether or not there is any benefit in prioritizing organic food over conventionally grown produce.

The new age horse manure pushers argued that produce grown organically is more nutritious because the soil it is grown in is not depleted of nutrients by chemical fertilizers. There are studies supporting this hypothesis and others debunking it. In the end, it was never proven that organic produce is more nutritious than the conventionally grown kind.

Then the new agers proposed that the chemical fertilizers and pesticides applied to conventionally grown produce were poisonous to humans. The jury is still out on this. Again, some studies suggest this is possible while others refute the assertion. And anyhow, a thorough washing with soap and water should render the concern moot.

But what neither side has ever considered or tested (at least not to my knowledge) is the effect of pesticides on the human microbiome. While the chemicals used to protect out produce from fungi and insects might be in doses too low to damage us directly, might they be harmful to the microorganisms residing in our guts? Might they contribute to the declining microbiome diversity seen in industrialized nations? The very decline associated with a rise in chronic disease and autoimmune disorders.

We're very poor at understanding complex systems

I don’t know the answer but, being cautious by nature I wouldn’t bet against it. We are very poor at understanding complex systems. Every time we tamper with nature there are unforeseen downstream consequences. We are also prone to making attribution errors, mistakenly believing that x causes y until we eventually discover we were completely wrong.

What are the takeaways here?

  1. Your microbiome is very important to your health – science now agrees

  2. You should protect your microbiome from agents that may harm it – antibiotics, antifungals, antibacterials

  3. You should cultivate microbiome diversity – a variety of fruit and vegetables (probably organic), fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, natto)

  4. Limit foods that promote overgrowth of harmful bacteria – sugars, artificial sweeteners

  5. When in doubt, follow nature. The burden of proof is not on the natural but on the unnatural (butter vs margarine, morning sickness vs thalidomide, not inhaling smoke vs cigarettes and vaping and so on ad infinitum)
