Somewhere along the way, society quietly lowers its expectations for us.
At 40, we're told to expect a slower metabolism.
At 50, sore knees and aching backs become "just part of getting older."
By 60, people begin congratulating us simply for being active.
We reject that idea.
At Empower, we believe your fifth, sixth, seventh—even eighth—decade of life can still be filled with strength, adventure, confidence, and possibility.
We've watched members learn to lift weights for the first time in their 50s. We've seen people complete their first pull-up in their 60s. We've coached athletes through their first HYROX race, helped parents keep up with teenagers, and watched grandparents discover they're capable of far more than they imagined.
Aging is inevitable.
Decline isn't.
Located on Alma Street in West Point Grey, Empower helps adults from Kitsilano, Point Grey, Dunbar, UBC, and across Vancouver's West Side become stronger, move better, and enjoy life for decades to come.

Healthy aging isn't about looking 25 again.
It's about reaching retirement with the freedom to say yes.
Yes to skiing Whistler, hiking the North Shore, walking Jericho Beach with your dog, and travelling without worrying whether your body can keep up.
It's about being able to lift your grandchild onto your shoulders, get down on the floor—and stand back up again without a second thought, and yes to trying something new.
Fitness isn't the goal. Freedom is.
And that's what we train for every day.
Our bodies naturally change as we age.
Muscle mass gradually declines. Bone density decreases. Recovery can take a little longer. Many people notice stiffness creeping into their mornings or discover that activities they once took for granted now leave them sore for days.
None of that means your best physical years are over.
In fact, many of our members become stronger in their 50s than they were in their 30s—not because they're younger, but because they're finally training with purpose and consistency.
The research is remarkably clear. Regular strength training and functional exercise can help:
Build and preserve muscle
Improve bone density
Increase balance and stability
Improve mobility
Support heart health
Maintain a healthy body composition
Reduce aches and pains
Increase energy
Maintain independence later in life
You don't have to fight aging. You simply have to stop surrendering to it.

We don't train muscles. We train people.
Strong enough to lift a kayak onto the roof of the car.
Mobile enough to garden all afternoon.
Fit enough to hike the Grouse Grind one weekend and explore Vancouver's seawall the next.
Balanced enough to avoid the falls that too often steal independence later in life.
Confident enough to say "yes" when adventure comes calling.
Unlike traditional gyms that isolate muscles on machines, functional fitness prepares your body for the movements you'll use every day.
Because nobody's life gets better simply because they can leg press another 50 pounds. Life gets better when carrying groceries feels easy, when your back doesn't hurt after a weekend in the garden, when you can keep up with your kids—or your grandkids, and when you stop worrying about what your body can't do and start discovering what it can.

At Empower, every workout is coached and every movement can be modified.
Every member receives individual attention.
We're far more interested in helping you move well for the next 30 years than impressing someone with a heavy weight on the barbell.
Many group fitness classes are built around managing large numbers of people.
Our classes are intentionally small, allowing our coaches to know your name, understand your goals, and provide meaningful feedback throughout every session.
Walk into most gyms and you'll find people trying to prove something.
Walk into Empower and you'll find people trying to improve something.
Our members range from beginners to experienced athletes, but they all share one thing in common:
They're here to become healthier, stronger humans.
And they'll cheer just as loudly for your first push-up as someone else's first ring muscle up.

No two people arrive with the same goals.
That's why we offer several ways to train.
Perfect if you're new to exercise, returning after injury, or simply want a program built entirely around you.
Individual coaching. Individual programming. Individual results.
Want the motivation of training with others while still receiving individualized coaching?
Small Group Training gives you the best of both worlds.
Forget everything you've seen on YouTube.
CrossFit at Empower isn't about elite athletes.
It's about functional movement, intelligent coaching, and helping ordinary people become extraordinarily capable.
Every workout is scaled to your fitness level.
A great entry point into functional fitness for people who enjoy running, want a structured strength-and-cardio workout, or prefer movements with a shorter learning curve.
Designed specifically for women over 40, Lift Over Forty is a once-weekly strength training class coached by Coach Amy.
You'll learn proper lifting technique, build confidence with barbells and weights, and get stronger in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Fit Over 40 is a twice-weekly small-group program coached by Coach Amy for adults who want to build strength, improve mobility, boost cardiovascular fitness, and feel healthier overall.
Every workout is designed to be challenging, supportive, and adaptable to your current fitness level.
Not even close.
Many of our members begin in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. Some have never exercised consistently before. Others are returning after years away.
Every workout is scaled to meet you where you are.
You're not alone.
Many of our members arrive with old injuries, joint pain, or mobility restrictions. Our coaches modify movements every day to help people continue progressing safely.
No. Helping people get fit is literally our job.
When it's coached properly and scaled appropriately, absolutely.
In fact, strength training is one of the most valuable things adults over 40 can do for their long-term health.
That's exactly what your No Sweat Intro is for.
We'll learn about your goals, your experience, your schedule, and any injuries before recommending the best path forward.
CLIENT STORIES
"Since joining Empower, my perception of CrossFit has entirely changed. The community is really incredible and it's so exciting and inspiring to see everybody in all age groups excel and do really incredible things. For me, Empower means community and longevity."
- Empower member Laura R., aka "Organa"
"I have tried other types of gyms before joining Empower, and I really appreciate the dedication and sustainability of the group classes. You have to show up. You have to do the same workout as everyone else. And you have to finish. I really like that part of CrossFit, and it brings a lot of value to my life."
- Empower member Mehdi S., aka "Maxim"
There comes a point where almost everyone has a choice.
Accept that getting older means becoming smaller, weaker, slower, and less capable. Or decide that the next chapter of life can still be your strongest.
At Empower, we've seen too many people surprise themselves to believe decline is inevitable.
We don't promise easy. We don't promise quick fixes.
But we can promise expert coaching, a supportive community, and a smarter way to train for the life you want to live.
If you're looking for a gym in Vancouver, Kitsilano, Point Grey, Dunbar, or UBC that understands the unique needs of adults over 40, we'd love to meet you.
